Short Circuit, Coordination and Arc Flash Studies

A Short circuit study is used to determine the available fault current or short circuit current at each point in the power distribution system. Based on that study, engineers can determine the required interrupting capacity of the circuit breakers which forms the basis of designing a proper electrical distribution system. A Short Circuit Analysis will help to ensure that personnel and equipment are protected by determining proper interrupting ratings of protective devices (circuit breaker and fuses).

A Short circuit study is very crucial in power systems. In addition, it is a prerequisite for preparing an Arc flash study. Without performing short circuit analysis, an arc flash study, which is a recommended practice for any power system industries, cannot be completed.

CSA Z462 standard recommends updated analysis when changes occur in the electrical distribution system that could affect the results of the analysis and that the incident energy analysis be reviewed for accuracy. It is recommended by CSA Z462 that workers receive periodic retraining in safety related work practices and applicable changes in the CSA Z462 Standard.

A protective device coordination study is required to properly select and set the power systems protective devices. This is important to ensure that the overcurrent protective devices are safely protecting the in-rush currents of the electrical equipment.
