TELUS Toronto Internet Data Centre - Chiller Plant and Data Space

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This was a large contract for an internet data centre facility. The project included data Floor build-out on two separate floors and a central cooling plant upgrade. MAT 4Site Engineers was retained as the Mechanical Engineering consultants for the project.

The data floor Mechanical Engineering and Design consisted of multiple chilled water units (24x30T units), raised floor air distribution, double-interlocked pre-action sprinklers, gas fire suppression systems, VESDA detection systems, make-up air and humidification systems, plumbing & drainage and controls upgrades and expansions.

The cooling plant upgrade for the 150,000sq.ft facility included up to 3 new 525-T VFD chillers, 3 VFD cooling towers, a free-cooling heat exchanger, and eight duplex pump sets. The design was spilt into multiple phases to fit the schedule and budget requirements of the client and growth of the facility. All critical systems were designed with a very high level of redundancy.

The project involved pre-purchasing of all major equipment with long-lead delivery times.
Significant coordination with the electrical team was required on this project as the Electrical design services included new dual feed electrical distribution for the data centre floor, fire alarm expansion, security, lighting and life safety.

Services

Project services included feasibility planning, conceptual design, detailed engineering & design, construction review and contract administration. The systems designed include HVAC, Plumbing and Drainage, BAS, and Fire Protection.
